Wood ducks nest in the natural cavities of trees near water. A common natural cavities chosen by wood ducks is a hole made by a pileated woodpecker. They eat seeds, insects, and berries. They were nearly extinct by the early 20th century due to overhunting. Wood ducks live in wooded wetlands and near slow-moving rivers.
