About raccoons:
Raccoons prefer to live in woodland areas near water. They build dens in trees and are primarily nocturnal. They have adapted well to urban areas throughout the United States. Although they have spread to other parts of the world, raccoons are native only to North and South America. Raccoons do not hibernate but in cold weather they sleep for up to a month at a time. Their diet includes, among other things, berries, nuts, insects, small mammals, lizards, crayfish, frogs, fish, and bird eggs. They can climb down trees head first. Gestation is about two months and young are usually born between December and April. A litter consists of from two to seven young.
