Egg Sac and Alevin, colored pencil

About the spawn cycle:
Spawning fish lay egg sacs in "redds", which are nesting areas at the bottom of streams. Alevins are the newly hatched fish, still in the larval stage. The yolk sac remains attached for nutritional purposes as the digestive tracts develop. The fry evolves from the alevin, once the yolk sac is absorbed and the fish is ready to consume live food. At this point, the fish leaves the gravel. Following the fry stage are the parr (also known as a fingerling), smolt, and grilse.
