Lake trout are freshwater char of cold, deep northern lakes in North America. Char is the common name for the genus Salvelinus. Many types of trout are char. Lake trout are the largest of the trouts. It is also referred to by the following names: laker, mackinaw trout, grey trout, salmon trout, togue and touladi (Source: Fisheries and Oceans Canada).
